Summary

Description
English: This picture shows the abbey of Clairvaux, converted into a prison in the 19th century and more precisely the large cloister which was used a prison walk. The site of Clairvaux is one of the few testimonies in France of the transformation of monastic sites, places of voluntary confinement, into places of punitive confinement. The constructions preserve the marks of the occupation, first by the monks and then by the convicts until the seventies. The web documentary "The cloister and the Prison" provides an analysis of these transformations of space in Europe and on the long term, from the Middle Ages until the present period.
