English: In the attic of Rosa Bonheur's studio (in By-Thomery, Seine-et-Marne), a large rolled canvas was recently discovered: the pencil sketch of the Horse Market! The canvas measures 2.50m x 4.50m: it has the same height as the final canvas but 50cm less in width. The traces of nails prove that this canvas was mounted on a stretcher and was therefore not cut.
Close examination reveals that the main subject is already in place. But after having sketched it, Rosa Bonheur must have noticed that she lacked space on the left to give depth to her composition, in particular to place the dome of the chapel of the Salpêtrière which closes the perspective. This is probably the reason why she abandoned this sketch. The studio owns the sketch of another painting, abandoned for the same reason.
