English: by tradition, Dr. Alexander Garden (England/Charleston, SC/Scotland, 1730-1791), dated 1889, probably after an earlier photograph by Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896) taken possibly from a portrait circa 1790, signed lower left "JD=1889" and inscribed "Sarony" lower right, pastel on paper, 27 x 22 in.; fine original 19th century giltwood and composition frame, some minor loss to pastel at face, mildew spot on jacket, not removed from frame Provenance: Estate of Mary Simms Oliphant Furman, Widow of Alester Garden Furman III, Greenville, South Carolina
