The pheon symbolizes combat readiness and ready response; it is divided in two, commemorating the brigade's battle heritage and campaign credits in both World War I and World War II.

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 158th Infantry Brigade on 11 Mar 1998.
It was redesignated on 28 Sep 1999 for the 2d Brigade, 87th Division.
