Preserved GWR "Castle" 4-6-0 (with double chimney & 4-row superheater) No.7029 "Clun Castle" with Collett 4,000 gll tender and in GWR lined green livery leaving Birmingham (Snow Hill) Station on "The Zulu" on the last day of express services from Paddington to Birkenhead (Woodside), 04/03/67. Two expresses ran, "The Zulu", the second to leave Paddington but the first to arrive at Birkenhead because it ran via the Bicester Cut Off, and "The Birkenhead Flyer", the first to leave Paddington but the second to arrive at Birkenhead because it ran via the original route via Didcot. "The Zulu" was hauled by an "Hymek" from Paddington to Banbury where "Clun Castle" took over to Birkenhead. On return, the reverse applied. Despite one cylinder producing hardly any power on the journey, 7029 nevertheless put up a good performance on "The Zulu". "Clun Castle" had been the last "Castle" in service, being withdrawn in December 1966. Scanned photograph taken with a Kowa SET camera.
