English: Revised version of Figure 3 from US Patent 6,953,409B2, which shows how engine and motor/generator speeds vary with vehicle speed.
In Mode 1 (shown here with vehicle speeds less than ~70 mph), clutch C1 is always engaged. There are two distinct sub-regions within Mode 1:
From ~5 to ~40 mph, the first fixed gear ratio (M1G1), in which clutch C4 is also engaged in conjunction with C1, which synchronizes the two motor/generator units. In general, both units are used as motors during M1G1 to aid acceleration.
From ~55 to ~70 mph, the second fixed gear ratio (M1G2), in which clutch C2 is also engaged in conjunction with C1; in this region, the two motor/generator units freewheel for better efficiency at higher speeds within M1.
In Mode 2 (shown here with vehicle speeds greater than ~70 mph), clutch C2 is always engaged. Although there are two more fixed gear ratios (M2G3 and M2G4), they are not shown on this figure, because they can be engaged at any point within the vehicle speed range of Mode 2.
In the third fixed gear ratio (M2G3), clutch C4 is also engaged in conjunction with C2, which synchronizes the two motor/generator units. In general, both units are used as motors during M2G3 to aid acceleration at higher speeds.
In the fourth fixed gear ratio (M2G4), clutch C3 is also engaged in conjunction with C2, which allows the two motor/generator units to freewheel for better efficiency.
