Summary

Description

Main picture: Ex-LNER Class A4 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, owned by The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust heads a York-Birmingham excursion through the remains of Kegworth station (which is actually in Sutton Bonington not Kegworth). The main point of the exercise (headcode 1Z59) was to get 60007 (TOPS No. 98898) from its home base, the North Yorks Moors Railway to the Severn Valley Railway for the SVR's "Festival of Steam" gala the next weekend. The excursion was run by Vintage Trains utilising their chocolate and cream Mk1/2 set. The load consisted of 10 coaches plus Class 47 diesel locomotive No. 47773 which had hauled the 1st leg of the excursion from Birmingham to York. I reckon that's a load of just over 400 tons.

Meanwhile, in the background a Class 156 DMU heads towards East Midlands Parkway on the relief lines with a local service.

Inset: The sign of the Station Hotel at the former station, also showing a painting of an A4 against an industrial backdrop. This contrasts with the modern industrial backdrop consisting of business units and the power lines from Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, which is just out of view in the background to the right of the photographer. Of course A4s are not historically relevant to the line at all since 60007 is an ex-Eastern engine and this is the Midland Main Line. But now in modern days perhaps it is?
