Summary

Description
English: "The Ruins" in Block Island Sound is the local colloquial name for the remains of Gardiners Point Island, which was formerly the site of the Gardiners Island Lighthouse – completed in December 1854 – and of Fort Tyler, built in 1898 during the Spanish American War to protect Long Island from potential bombardment by Spanish naval vessels. The island was originally a peninsula of Gardiners Island, connected by a long neck of land, but became detached by the Great Blizzard of 1888. Due to unstable conditions, the fort was abandoned in 1924, and designated as a National Bird Refuge in 1938. During World War II, the island was used for bombing practice which, combined with erosion, reduced the site to its current state. New York State considered designating it a park, but did not because of the possibility of unexploded ordnance.
