Summary

Description

English: City and Scale Museum Oschatz. The picture shows a shelf in a museum with two cassettes. The label reads:

These cassettes no longer contain Wim Thoelke's collection of "10 Stars with 27 Melodies" or Christmas songs, as the labels would suggest; instead, they contain telephone calls secretly recorded by the Stasi. Because magnetic tape for recordings was scarce and costly in East Germany, and the Stasi needed countless tapes for telephone surveillance, music cassettes – confiscated from packages sent by relatives in the west – were recorded over.

These cassettes were found, along with many others, in the Leipzig District Administration Office for State Security. Most of them had already been erased, to cover up all traces of the secret wiretapping.
