English: The IVI-IPO’s Legal Eagle Award, which is given annually to lawyers who have advanced the cause of justice, was presented to Locke Bowman, Director of the MacArthur Justice Center; G. Flint Taylor, a founding partner of the People’s Law Office; and Alexa Van Brunt, Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and attorney for the MacArthur Justice Center. The three attorneys were recognized for their pursuit of justice for the family of David Koschman, the 29-year-old who died in 2004 after being punched by Richard J. Vanecko, a nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. In 2011, the MacArthur Justice Center and the People’s Law Office petitioned for the appointment of an independent prosecutor to investigate Koschman’s death and alleged the initial police investigation into his death may have been influenced by Vanecko’s relationship to Daley. As a result of the special prosecutor’s investigation, Vanecko was indicted for involuntary manslaughter. Earlier this year, Vanecko entered a guilty plea and served a 60-day jail sentence.
