Summary
Description1stBengalFusiliersMarchFromDagshaiMay1857.jpg |
English: The 1st Bengal Fusiliers Marching Down from Dugshai, after George F. Atkinson, 1857. (National Army Museum, London; 19526). Coloured lithograph from The Campaign in India 1857-58 from drawings made during the eventful period of the Great Mutiny, illustrating the military operations before Delhi and its neighbourhood. A series of 26 coloured lithographs by W Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-58. Capt. George Gladwin Denniss II, one of the officers depicted, wrote to his wife on 1 Oct.1857: "George Atkinson of the Engineers has done a capital sketch of my regiment going down the hill and sent it to me. I will send it to you if you wish to see it". On the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny the order to march on Delhi had been given from Simla, and reached the Regt. at Dugshai via Major George Ogle Jacob on 13 May 1857, upon which the Regt. marched down from its rest station at Dugshai, due to reach Umballa that evening. Major Jacob was killed in action at Delhi on 14 Sept. 1857. Soldiers are depicted wearing campaign dress of grey shirts and white covered forage caps. |
