English: Sarasvati is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts and learning.
She is also found in Jainism. In Japan, she is called Benzaiten and is the goddess of knowledge, music and everything that flows over time.
This artwork was produced between 1870 and 1880 CE, acquired in 1895 CE in a market in Calcutta, Bengal. It is now preserved at the British Library as item 2003,1022,0.43
The British Library curator's summary states, "Sarasvati, the goddess of learning and knowledge, is seated on a lotus flower suspended over a river. Her foot rests on her mount, a swan, while she holds a stack of palm leaf manuscripts in her lap that represent the vedas. Her other hand holds a vina."
