Summary

Description
English: Sarasvati is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts and learning.
  • She is also found in Jainism. In Japan, she is called Benzaiten and is the goddess of knowledge, music and everything that flows over time.
  • This artwork was produced between 1870 and 1880 CE, acquired in 1895 CE in a market in Calcutta, Bengal. It is now preserved at the British Library as item 2003,1022,0.43
  • The British Library curator's summary states, "Sarasvati, the goddess of learning and knowledge, is seated on a lotus flower suspended over a river. Her foot rests on her mount, a swan, while she holds a stack of palm leaf manuscripts in her lap that represent the vedas. Her other hand holds a vina."
  • Size of the original painting: 41 cm x 30.5 cm
