Summary

Description The River Ganges is symbolically represented as a goddess in many Hindu temples, including the earliest from mid-1st millennium CE that have survived. She stands on a makara, a mythical crocodile-fish-elephant-peacock icon. Typically with her on one side, Yamuna goddess is also represented with her standing on a mythical tortoise/turtle-like creature. The older artworks show them holding a water vessel with one hand (not above).
