Constructed in 1896, The Commerce City hall has weathered numerous floods and demolition attempts. Local citizens have fought diligently to maintain it. The city of Commerce was once the largest town in Scott County, serving as a river port and location of several factories that made products assisting with the draining of the swamps. The cities decline started in 1927 with the loss of local factories, the shift to transport freight by automobiles, and the completion of the swamp draining.
