Summary
Description09262022ProvoUtahTemple9.jpg |
English: More pictures and Videos at TempleVideos.com and ChurchOfJesusChristVideos.com President Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple would be closed for reconstruction following the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple this was announced in the General Conference in October 2021. It wasn’t until 31 years after the temple was built that a statue of the Angel Moroni was put atop the spire. While the spire was originally gold, the addition of Moroni led to changing the spire to white. Provo temples evoke a Space Age symbolism, a streamlined Saturn V rocket propelling the Apollo module beyond the terrestrial frontiers and into the great void of space,” Steven Cornell and Kirk Huffaker wrote in The Salt Lake Tribune in 2010. "The intended symbol, a Hebraic pillar of fire atop the cloud God employed to stifle the Egyptian army as Israel made her miraculous escape, was similar to the modern Saturn V imagery.” The church announced the new temple on Aug. 14, 1967, and held a special groundbreaking on Sept. 15, 1969. It was completed in early 1972. At the time, the temple serviced more than 100,000 members in central and eastern Utah. The Provo Utah Temple is located in Provo, Utah, it was built with a modern single-spire design, similar to the original method of the Ogden Utah Temple. The total land size is 17 acres, Exterior Finish is white cast stone; gold anodized aluminum grills; bronze glass panels; single painted spire. Architectural Features Single attached central spire with an angel Moroni statue. The temple has ordinance Rooms, instruction rooms, twelve sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The total floor size is 128,325 square feet. The Provo Utah Temple address is 2200 Temple Hill Dr, Provo, UT 84604. While members of the church revere the temples as the House of the Lord, the modern architecture of the temple often prompted other nicknames such as the wedding cake, flying saucer, and much, much, much more. The Provo temple’s location will remain the same — at the mouth of Rock Canyon on Provo’s east bench, overlooking the Provo Missionary Training Center, the Brigham Young University campus, the Provo-Orem area, and Utah Lake. In addition to the extensive overall exterior redesign, the renovated Provo temple will be without an angel Moroni statue. Originally built without, the temple had its current angel Moroni statue added atop the spire in 2003, three decades after its dedication. The public is welcome to walk the temple grounds and feel the peace inspired by this heavenly structure. |
