English: Vólos was a dual gauge station at the time of our visit in 1992. Seen here is 2-car DMU set 5527 on train 1850, 17:32 Vólos to Kalabáka was the last surviving section of the Thessaly Railway being the other metre gauge system in Greece, albeit much shorter than the Peloponese route.
This metre gauge line intersected with the main Athīna to Thessaloniki at Paliofarsalos. In 1998, the section from Vólos to Paliofarsalos closed to regular traffic with the section to Kalabáka being converted to standard gauge. Following a lengthy closure period whilst re-gauging took place, the Kalabáka branch was re-opened in 2001.
