Summary

Description

gauntlet track on Tramlink in Mitcham, London. Mitcham tram stop looking towards the bridge carrying London Road over the tram line.

An example of The upper picture is from The picture on the right is looking north from the bridge. There has been a railway of some sort at this point since 1803, although not continuously, the Surrey Iron Railway having been at a higher level than the present tramway. In 1967 the wall on the right, which dates from the construction of the Wimbledon & Croydon Railway, was in danger of collapse and was shored up, initially with timber baulks, later with massive concrete buttresses. When Tramlink was constructed, rather than go to the expense of rebuilding the wall, the planners opted to use gauntlet track for this section.
