Kuo-Ch’ing Tu (杜國清) was born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1941. He graduated from National Taiwan University in 1963 with an English Literature degree. Then, he received his Master of Arts in Japanese literature from Kwansei Gakuin University in 1970. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chinese Literature from Stanford in 1974. His research interests include, but are not limited to, Taiwanese Literature, Chinese literature, Chinese literary theories, comparative literature, and international literatures in Chinese. He has written nearly 500 poems, and authored various Chinese poetry books. He continues to co-edit Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series, Taiwan Studies Series, Taiwan Writers Translation Series, and Taiwan Literature: Chinese-English Bilingual Series. He translates English, Japanese, and French publications into Chinese and also modern works of Chinese into English. Dr. Tu also manages the Center for Taiwan Studies at UCSB. Additionally, he currently serves as the Lai Ho and Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies at UCSB.
