Western Esotericism and Rituals of Initiation is a book by Henrik Bogdan. It was published by SUNY Press in 2007.

Contents

[edit]

The book is a survey of Western esotericism and initiation rituals. He reviews previous research on both of these topics, before discussing Bogdan begins by discussing Freemasonry, particularly early Masonic rituals. He argues these rituals were the starting point for later Western esoteric initiatory rituals. He discuses the higher degrees of Freemasonry. He concludes by discussing the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as well as the movement of Gerald Gardner.

Publication

The author Henrik Bogdan (born 1972) is a professor in religious studies at the University of Gothenburg.[1][2] It is based on his doctoral thesis.[3] The book was published in 2007 by SUNY Press.[2] In 2010 it was given a French translation as Ésoterism Occidental et Rituels d'Initiation by Arché.[1] It is 235 pages long and has a bibliography and an index.[3]

Reception

[edit]

[4][5][6][7][8][9]

J. M. B. Porter of Choice magazine recommended it; he noted it as "one of the very few studies of Western initiatory practices", praising it as providing an introduction to the topic. He criticized it for what he viewed as an over-reliance on prior scholarship and for having only a "very limited" analysis of the ritual texts discussed in the book.[3]
