W.i.S.H. is an Indian girl group. The group consists of four members: Ri (Riya Duggal), Sim (Simran Duggal), Zo (Zoe Siddharth) and Suchi (Suchita Shirk).[3][4]

W.i.S.H. debuted on 1 March 2024, with their first single "Lazeez" (Urdu for "delicious" or "tasty").[4] The single is a part of the band's debut eight-track album.[5] The group uses a blend of English and Hindi languages. It emphasizes the fusion of international pop music with distinct Indian elements.[6]

The band has become fairly noticeable as it is the first Indian girl group in 22 years. The band recently has released a new song for the cricket World Cup hosted in India.

Name

[edit]

The group's name, W.i.S.H, is an acronym for the phrase "World Inka Stage Hai" (Hindi: वर्ल्ड इनका स्टेज है, lit.'The world is their stage').[7] The name is also a play on the Hindi word "विष" which means poison.

History

[edit]

Music composer Mikey McCleary launched the all-girl Indi-pop group W.i.S.H. in collaboration with Sony Music India.[8] McCleary aims to fill the gap between the mainstream Bollywood music and Indie music.[9][10]

In an attempt to portray different emotions and diverse style, McCleary has taken inspiration from international icons like Michael Jackson and Ariana Grande, as well as Indian stalwarts like A. R. Rahman and Sunidhi Chauhan.[6] Suchi also takes inspiration from Fifth Harmony.[11]

Ri and Sim are sisters, and have collaborated earlier in the duo Simetri. They were announced among the Top 24 in the nationwide hunt for English-language artists from across India due to their early successes in with Hindi pop releases. The duo released many tracks. Notable names include Infinity, Ego, Dreamers In The Sun.[12] They performed at Lollapalooza in 2023.[13] Ri, the older of the two sisters, is the group leader of the band.[14]

Zo was a part of duo Zoe & Urgen before joining W.i.S.H. She released music with Urgen, her partner.[15]

On September 23, 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the official theme song for the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.[16] The tournament's theme song, "Whatever It Takes," was written by W.i.S.H.[17]
