The Black Sword Hack is dark fantasy / sword and sorcery themed tabletop roleplaying game developed by Alexandre "Kobayashi" Jeannette.[1]

Description

[edit]

The game mechanics are an evolution of The Black Hack rules, with changes made to support the intended sub-genre. The rules are a much simplified version of the original D&D rules; in particular, there are no character classes but instead more narrow backgrounds linked to special abilities. The rules also make use of the supply die concept from Black Hack, but use it mainly for more "abstract" aspects. The game also introduces a new variant of supply die in a new "doom die" that tests characters' running out of luck. Beyond the simple game mechanics, Black Sword Hack is more about the sword and sorcery setting and the assumptions that come with it.[2]

The first edition was published in 2020 by Livres de l'Ours, and a second edition in 2023 by the Merry Mushmen.[3][4]

The game is a part of the "Old School Renaissance" or "OSR" movement of role playing games.[5]
