Thanasis Deligiannis (born 1983, Larissa, Greece) is a Greek transdisciplinary artist, stage director, composer and educator based in the Netherlands.
Biography
[edit]Thanasis Deligiannis was born in Larissa, Greece in 1983, growing up in a family of traditional musicians, dancers and farmers[1]. He studied composition and music theatre next to Dimitris Terzakis, Giorgos Kyriakakis and Sofia Karakantza at the Department of Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and moved to the Netherlands in 2007 to continue his Masters studies in composition with Wim Henderickx at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam at the Amsterdam University of the Arts[2]. Since his graduation in 2010 he lives in Amsterdam as a Dutch-based artist and educator, working in the Netherlands and abroad[3].
Career
[edit]Thanasis Deligiannis has been a featured artist at Venice Biennale 2024, presenting the collective interdisciplinary work Xirómero/Dryland[4] at the Greek Pavilion (April-November 2024), conceived by himself and Yannis Michalopoulos, created along with the artists Elia Kalogianni, Yorgos Kyvernitis, Kostas Chaikalis and Fotis Sagonas. He has been an Onassis Culture Fellow for 2022-2023, co-directing with Yannis Michalopoulos The Margaroni Residency at Onassis AiR[5], a large-scale artistic-research on which the work Xirómero/Dryland was based.
From 2017 to 2019 Deligiannis has been artist-in-residence at Gaudeamus[6] with the support of the program Nieuwe Makers by the Performing Arts Fund NL, and at the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2012. In 2017-2018 he worked for the Tanztheater Wuppertal – Pina Bausch Company as a member of Dimitris Papaioannou’s creative team[7] and was assistant to Heiner Goebbels at Manchester International Festival. For the years 2016 and 2017 Deligiannis was artistic coordinator of the music-theatre research platform RE-FUSE[8], an initiative of the Greek National Opera in collaboration with Gaudeamus. Since 2018 he has been teaching at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam at the Amsterdam University of the Arts[9] and occasionally gives workshops to educational institutions in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. He has been assistant artistic director for the Nieuw Ensemble from 2011 till 2014 and artistic coordinator of the intercultural music platform Atlas Lab[10] from 2011 till 2016.
In 2013 Deligiannis co-founded the Amsterdam-based company I/O[11] focused on the creation of international interdisciplinary projects. The work of the company brings together technology and the interaction among different disciplines, while exploring hybrid artistic forms and redefining the dialogue between the performative event and its audience.
Deligiannis has been active as a transdisciplinary artist, director, composer, sound designer and performer in Europe, Asia and North America.
