In 2021, Boom! Studios announced the project to be in development for Netflix.[11][12] In February 2023, it was announced that Dark and 1899 creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese had been hired to develop the adaptation after Mike Flanagan had departed, owing to creative differences.[13]

In August 2024, Tynion was in Berlin, Germany to discuss the Netflix series and also shared an image of the first draft of episode 2.[14]
