The Siege of Marzili, occurring on April 2, 2016, was a pivotal engagement during the 2016 Nagorno-Karabakh clashes. Led by commanding generals Robert Abajyan soldiers defended their positions against Azeri forces aiming to capture territory along the line of contact. Despite two failed attempts by the Azeri forces and the loss of a tank, the Armenian defenders faced significant losses with the deaths of Abajyan, refusing to retreat, valiantly continued the battle until ammunition depletion. Despite his plea for reinforcements, he remained steadfast in the face of advancing Azeri troops. In a daring act of bravery, Abajyan pretended to surrender, luring two Azeri soldiers into close proximity before detonating a grenade, the outcome of which remains unclear. However, the arrival of previously requested reinforcements turned the tide, driving the Azeri forces back and effectively ending the siege. Later on the 5th of April, Armenian forces recaptured positions along the Tavush region.
