Paulus Geertruida (Paul) Röttger (Winterswijk, March 6, 1954) is a Dutch actor and director.
Biography
[edit]Röttger graduated from the Arnhem Theater School in 1976. During the first two years he played a lot in film and television productions. The best known of these was the television series Oorlogswinter (1975), in which he played the role of Michiel van Beusekom.
He then chose the stage, including with Toneelgroep Noorder Compagnie, and worked for ten years at the Ro Theater, where he played in Tartuffe, Pinocchio, De opera van Smyrna and Merlijn. He was also a member of the artistic direction of the Ro Theater for three years.
After switching to the free circuit, he played in Benjamin in het leger, Jeanne d'Arc, Amadeus and de Wijze Kater, among others. At the same time he was head of Theater at John van de Rest Theater Productions and played in the John van de Rest television series Laat maar zitten, in the role of Krukas.
More recent performances that he has performed are Lazarus and Struisvogels op de Coolsingel, directed by Peter Sonneveld of Bonheur Theater Company Rotterdam, Wachten op Godot at the National Theater, directed by Jos Thie, and Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen, in which he acted as wel as directed.
Rotterdam Center for Theater
[edit]In 1988, Röttger founded the Rotterdam Center for Theater (rcth) together with the then RCA (now TNR), where he has been teaching, directing and director since its foundation. Under his leadership, the rcth developed into an intercultural theater center, where training courses were provided, but also various theater projects were realized for different target groups often accompanied by educational activities.
Since 1992, a yearly theater project was realized, in which amateurs and professional theater makers and students from the Rotterdam Center for Theater worked together. In 2012, a new path was taken with these productions through the first co-production in this line of performances. Together with the Humanitas Bergweg foundation, Röttger realized a performance based on the life stories of homosexual elderly people; "Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen".In 2012/2013, Röttger was director of the rcth for 25 years. In his anniversary year he focused on performances about gay emancipation and sexual diversity. Under his direction the production Gay in de stad - an educational performance for secondary and intermediate vocational education - was performed, and Bloedverwanten - an adaptation of the novel by Han Nefkens for higher-education schools.
In 2013/2014, Röttger directed the performance 'Wie is er nou gek of ik is een ander', a theater production based on the life stories of people with a psychiatric background, in a co-production between the rcth, the Pameijer foundation and Bavo-Europoort. In this production, the clients or patients involved are present and participate in every performance, together with professional actors. The performance won "de Duim", the best healthcare award of 2014 from Zorgbelang Zuid-Holland.
Erasmus pin, Jos Brink Prize
[edit]In 2004, Röttger received the Erasmus pin from councilor Stefan Hulman after the performance 'Stadsportretten', as a token of appreciation for his commitment to the cultural and social cohesion of Rotterdam.
In 2009, on behalf of the RCTH, he received a certificate of encouragement presented by Minister Plasterk in the context of the Jos Brink Prize. The rcth received this exceptional certificate for making homosexuality a topic of discussion in schools in the Rotterdam region through their 'Seks in de stad' projects.[1]
In 2014, he received the best healthcare idea of 2014 from Zorgbelang Zuid-Holland "de Duim" following the performance "Who is crazy, or am I someone else?"
The road to a new cultural institution starting 2017
[edit]From January 1, 2015, Paul Röttger became artistic director of Theater Maatwerk. This is in response to an agreement between the RCTH and the Pameijer Foundation that came into effect on January 1st, 2015. The three institutions moved towards a new cultural institution starting 2017 in which structural theater was made with actors with and without disabilities based on social themes. Röttger's work focussed on the encounter with 'the other'.[2]
At the end of January 2016, a cultural plan was submitted for 2017-2020 in which the two organizations (rcth and Theater Maatwerk) were merged into a new inclusive organization with a company & an academy under the name 'Theater Babel Rotterdam'.
Under the leadership of Röttger, this new 'inclusive' theater company worked exclusively "inclusively", meaning actors with and without disabilities. Röttger directed the performances under the new name Theater babel Rotterdam: 'To be or not', 'Con Amore', 'Ont-heemd', 'Het gedroomde café', 'Seks in Rotterdam'. In 2018, Röttger celebrated his 30th anniversary as director of the institution with the theater choreography 'Piazza della vita'.
From 2019 to 2024, Paul directed the performances 'From J to Jessica', 'Ik via de ander', 'Romeo's & Julia's', 'Henkes monologen' and finally 'Over dromen & luchtkastelen', with which he said goodbye to his work at Theater Babel Rotterdam after 35 years.
