PATRIARKH is a Polish black metal band formed in 2024 by Bartłomiej "Bartek" Krysiuk. The group was established following a legal dispute over the rights to the name of the influential black metal band Batushka, which Krysiuk co-founded. After a Polish court awarded the rights to the Batushka name to co-founder Krzysztof Drabikowski,[1] Krysiuk rebranded his formation as PATRIARKH.[2][3]
PATRIARKH's music is deeply rooted in Eastern Orthodox traditions, blending black metal with elements of doom metal and folk influences. Their works incorporate ritualistic and liturgical themes, reflecting the spiritual and mystical heritage of Eastern Christianity. Traditional instruments such as mandolins and dulcimers are often used in their compositions, enhancing the ritualistic and atmospheric qualities of their music. They excel at blending aggression with melody.[4]
Following the rebranding, PATRIARKH’s first album under the new name, ПРОРОК ИЛИЯ (Prophet Ilja), is scheduled for release on January 3, 2025, under Napalm Records.[5] The concept album tells the story of a Polish villager (named Eliasz Klimowicz in reality) from the 1930s who claimed to be the reincarnation of the biblical prophet Elijah. This narrative explores themes of prophecy, religious fervor, and the formation of a niche Christian Orthodox sect in rural Poland.
In anticipation of their debut album as PATRIARKH, the band released several singles, including Wierszalin II, Wierszalin IV.[6][7][8] The former features Maciej Maleńczuk as guest vocalist, the latter features guest vocals by Eliza Sacharczuk.
The band started to promote their new album in September by announcing the last tour under the name Batushka called Epic Prophecy For Europe 2024.[9][10] They toured with the support of VLTIMAS and God Dethroned. As the tour ended, the band's name was changed.
