The book was published in 1994.

It was the first entry in the publisher's series titled Women and Gender in North American Religions.[1]

The Christian Century[2]

Publishers Weekly called it a "splendid investigation", saying it was "groundbreaking in its clarity in recording for the first time the voices of women interpreting the almost palpable bond between the sacred and the sexual." They said the academic language used was balanced by the stories of the women presented.[1]
