2024 Malaysia Futsal Cup

The Malaysia Futsal Cup (abbreviated as MFC) is an annual futsal club competition in Malaysia organized by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). Teams qualify for the competition based on their performance in Malaysia Premier Futsal League (MPFL).

First contested in the 2022 season, the competition serves as a domestic cup for futsal in Malaysia. The competition is contested by 8 teams, 6 teams qualify directly and 2 teams from the qualifying round. The winners of the competition are awarded with a slot to compete in the AFF Futsal Club Championship. Selangor MAC were the inaugural winners of the competition, having beaten Pahang Rangers 4–3 in the 2022 final.[1]

Johor Darul Ta'zim are the current champions, having beaten Selangor 3–2 in the 2024 final for their first title.

History

[edit]

Beginnings

[edit]

The first Malaysia Futsal Cup took place during the 2022 season, featuring eight teams: Negeri Sembilan, Pahang Rangers, PDRM, Pulau Pinang, Selangor MAC, Selangor TOT United, Shah Alam City, and Terengganu. The inaugural match of the Malaysia Futsal Cup was held on 11 June 2022 and saw Selangor MAC secure a victory over Shah Alam City with a score of 2–1 at the Panasonic Sport Complex in Shah Alam, Selangor. The historic first goal in Malaysia Futsal Cup history was scored by Silva Matheus Vasconcelos of Selangor MAC, marking a memorable start to the competition.

The tournament progressed with intense matches, culminating in the inaugural final on 23 July 2022, held at the same venue. The final featured a thrilling encounter between Selangor MAC and Pahang Rangers. In a dramatic showdown, Selangor MAC emerged victorious with a 4–3 win, securing their place in the annals of Malaysian futsal history. The final match drew an enthusiastic crowd of 798 people, underscoring the growing popularity and support for futsal in Malaysia.

Throughout the competition, standout performances were witnessed, with Ridzwan Bakri of Pahang Rangers and Amirul Radzi of Pulau Pinang sharing the honor of being the top scorers, each netting six goals.

Competition format

[edit]

Qualification

[edit]

A total of ten teams are set to participate in the Malaysia Futsal Cup competition. However, only eight of these teams will compete in the main competition. The top six teams from the MPFL Division 1 will automatically qualify for the main round of the competition, ensuring their place based on their superior performance throughout the season. Meanwhile, the two bottom teams from Division 1 will have to face additional challenges to secure their spots. They will compete against the champion and runner-up of MPFL Division 2. The outcomes of these crucial matches will determine the final two teams that will join the main round of the Malaysia Futsal Cup.[2]

Knockout stage

[edit]

The format of the Malaysia Futsal Cup features a knockout stage that includes home and away matches, beginning from the quarterfinals and continuing through the semi-finals and final. This format ensures that each team has the opportunity to compete on their home turf, adding an element of strategy and excitement to the tournament. The eight teams participating in this stage comprise the six teams that qualify directly based on their performance in the MPFL Division 1, along with the two teams that emerge victorious from the qualification round. These teams will be drawn into the knockout bracket, where they will face off in a series of matches.
