Lando is an upcoming American space opera film written by Donald Glover and Stephen Glover. Produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film will be part of the Star Wars franchise. It stars Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, reprising his role from the film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
A television series featuring Lando Calrissian was announced to be in development for Disney+ in December 2020. Justin Simien was developing the project, but left during 2022 and the Glovers were hired to replace him. They reworked the project to be a theatrical feature film, and their involvement was revealed in July 2023 when Donald Glover was confirmed to be reprising his role as Calrissian from Solo.

[edit]An "event series" for the streaming service Disney+ based on the Star Wars character Lando Calrissian was announced in December 2020 during a Disney+ Day event, with Justin Simien developing the series. The character was portrayed in the Star Wars films by Billy Dee Williams and Donald Glover.[2] In May 2022, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said the series was still in development and they were having discussions with Glover about him reprising his role as Calrissian from the film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).[3] In April 2023, Glover said discussions were continuing and he was open to reprising the role "the right way". That July, Simien said the project had been put on hold due to scheduling issues but he believed that he was still attached to the project. Soon after this, Above the Line's Jeff Sneider reported that Simien left the series in 2022 due to his commitments to the film Haunted Mansion (2023) and was likely just "toeing the company line" in his comments.[4] Simien later stated that the "writing was super on the wall" in regards to him leaving the project but there was no conversation with Lucasfilm about this and his exit was not confirmed to him until it was reported online. He said the series was "pretty developed" before this point, with a series bible, concept art, and multiple scripts completed.[5]
Sneider further reported in July 2023 that Lucasfilm had approached Donald Glover and his brother Stephen about writing the series themselves and the pair were officially developing it by the start of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which then put a halt to work on the series.[4] The involvement of the Glovers, as well as confirmation that Donald Glover would reprise his role as Calrissian in the series, was confirmed soon after Sneider's report.[1] Stephen Glover revealed that their latest plans for the project, before work was halted by the strike, was for it to be a theatrical feature film rather than a television series for Disney+.[6] In November 2023, Dave Filoni revealed that he was now chief creative officer at Lucasfilm, after serving as executive producer on various Star Wars television series, and would be directly involved in the planning of future films and series.[7]
