Sarukhán was director of the Biology Institute at UNAM from 1979 to 1996. In 1987, he was appointed Vice Chancellor for Science at UNAM, and was Rector (President) from 1989 to 1997.[3] He has been a professor in the Institute of Ecology since 1988 (emeritus since 2006). Sarukhán has been the driving force for the main ecological research group in Mexico and of the Ecology Institute at UNAM, which has more than 50 researchers and has produced more than 160 Ph.D. students, and for the Ecology Center in Morelia, Michoacán (CIECO).[2]

He helped establish the National Commission on Biodiversity of México and was appointed as National Coordinator of CONABIO in 1992.
