James F. Strange (February 2, 1938 – March 23, 2018) was a distinguished American archaeologist and professor of religious studies, recognized for his significant contributions to New Testament archaeology. He spent the majority of his academic career at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, where he became a prominent figure in his field.
Early Life and Education
[edit]James Francis Strange was born in Pampa, Texas, and raised in Tyler, Texas. He developed an early interest in religion and philosophy, leading him to pursue higher education at Rice University. Initially majoring in chemistry, he later switched to philosophy. After graduating from Rice, Strange attended Yale Divinity School, where he became actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He earned his Master of Divinity from Yale in 1964 and completed his Ph.D. in New Testament studies at Drew University in 1970 [1] [2].
Academic Career
[edit]In 1972, Strange joined the faculty of USF as an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and quickly rose to the rank of full professor by 1977. He held several key administrative positions, including Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Executive Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies, and Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. His academic excellence was recognized with numerous awards, including the Silver Medallion Award for Brotherhood from the National Conference of Christians and Jews and a National Geographic grant[3] [4]
Archaeological Work
[edit]James F. Strange is best known for his archaeological work in Israel, particularly his excavations at Sepphoris from 1983 to 2010. His work at Sepphoris provided significant insights into the urban life during the time of Jesus, including the discovery of large buildings, aqueducts, and an outdoor theater. Strange believed that Jesus likely spent considerable time in Sepphoris, challenging traditional views of Jesus' rural upbringing [1] [2] [3].
Strange also participated in numerous other archaeological projects, including excavations at Tel Gezer, Khirbet Shema, Meiron, Gush Halav, and Qumran. His discoveries, such as pottery, coins, and mosaics, have been displayed at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian and the Rockefeller Museum [1] [5].
Contributions to ASOR
[edit]James F. Strange was deeply involved with the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), where he served on the Board of Trustees and received the Charles U. Harris Service Award in 2006. His participation in ASOR's annual meetings and contributions to its publications significantly influenced the field of Near Eastern archaeology [6] [7].
Personal Life
[edit]Strange married Carolyn Midkiff, whom he met at Rice University. They had four children, all of whom were involved in archaeological work at some point. His son, James Riley Strange, and daughter, Katherine Strange Burke, have followed in his academic footsteps [3]. His other two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Strange and Joanna Carissa Strange, the oldest and youngest, forged their own paths.
Legacy
[edit]James F. Strange passed away on March 23, 2018. His legacy continues through his extensive contributions to archaeology and religious studies, his numerous publications, and the many students and colleagues he inspired throughout his career [1] [2][3][4] Strange's children and wife published a book of his letters written while excavating titled, Within the Dusts of Time: Letters from the Field.
