Freeze the Fall is a Canadian rock band from Kelowna, formed in 2022 by Quinn Mitzel (guitar, lead vocals), Aria Becker (bass, background vocals), and Jonah Goncalves (drums). They have released one EP, "Thrones."[1] Their latest single "VHS" was released on October 31, 2024.[2]
History
[edit]2022: Band Formation
[edit]In the Summer of 2022, teenagers Quinn Mitzel and Aria Becker were attending the same music program in Kelowna. They bonded over their shared musical influences and decided to start playing music together. A few weeks later, a mutual friend suggested they reach out to another young musician, a drummer named Jonah Goncalves. The new band collectively wrote their first original song "Insomnia" only six weeks after the band formed. [3]
2023: First Live Shows, Recording Sessions & Filming Music Videos
[edit]Freeze the Fall began 2023 by establishing a social media presence, and performing live for the first time at local venues in Kelowna. In June, the band won their first award, for Favorite Metal/Hard Music Group or Artist at the Gonzo Okanagan People's Choice Music Awards.[4]
Later in the year, the band began work on their first EP "Thrones" with Producer Jordan Chase at OoDeLally Recordings in Kelowna.[5]
In late December, the band traveled to Lake Country, British Columbia to film music videos for their EP, in collaboration with 26 Films. The band noted that “to maximize our budget, we filmed all 5 videos in one day. We filmed these in an unheated old barn on December 28 for more than 10 hours in -7 degree celsius weather with 15 costume changes – intense!”[6]
Freeze the Fall finished the year by performing at the Kelowna "New York New Year's Eve" Party in Stuart Park.[7]
2024: Release of Thrones EP, Record Label Signing, SOCAN Award & VHS Single/Video Release
[edit]Freeze the Fall started the year by releasing their first single "Glitch" which would later be included on their "Thrones" EP. [8]
To help fund the recording and release of their EP, the band initiated a crowd-funding initiative via Kickstarter. The resulting campaign raised nearly twice the amount of their original funding goal.[9]
A significant milestone occurred for the band in April when they signed a distribution deal with 604 Records.[10]
In July, the band released their EP "Thrones."[11]
Freeze the Fall next landed a SOCAN Young Canadian Artists award in the "Ones to Watch" category, sponsored by SiriusXM Canada.[12]
Just in time for Halloween, the band released a new single "VHS." They once again worked with 26 Films to produce an accompanying music video. According to the band, "'VHS' is an ode to our collective love of horror movies. The song explores the relentless evil that power can inspire. Ultimately we wrote this song for the music lovers who also love the genre of horror."[13]
