Fortnite Monopoly

Fortnite Monopoly is a board game released in 2018. A derivative of Monopoly, the game incorporates elements of Fortnite, a multiplayer online battle royale game that had gone viral the previous year.

Release

The Fortnite version of Monopoly was announced in September 2018 along with a dart-firing NERF-branded gun. The game was released on October 1, 2018.

Gameplay

Fortnite Monopoly plays similar to the original Monopoly, but is heavily modified to play similar to Fortnite: Battle Royale, basing its properties on the various locales of the game's overall map. Some of the major departures from the original board game include the use of health points in lieu of money, allowing players to immediately claim an initially visited, unclaimed property without buying or auctioning it off (to represent how players begin the game landing at a chosen area and then loot it for materials and weapons), and the use of a special "action" die that allows players to build defensive walls, attack opponent(s) or heal.

Reception

The NPD Group declared that Monopoly Fortnite was the top selling new Games Supercategory item in the United States for the week ending October 6, 2018.

The Washington Post described it as "a classic board game mixed with one of the year's most popular video games" and noted how the board included distinct locations and properties based on Fortnite, adding that players "must avoid the Storm to survive. The last one alive wins it all."
