David Charles Waterman is an American lawyer who is the nominee to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa.

Education

Waterman earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from the George Washington University in 2009, a Master of Philosophy in political thought and intellectual history[2] from the University of Cambridge in 2010 and a Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law in 2013. While at UCLA Law, he served as a member of the National and State Moot Court Competition teams and the vice president of external affairs of the Moot Court Honors Board.[2][3]

Career

From 2013 to 2014, he served as a law clerk to Judge John Alfred Jarvey of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, from 2014 to 2015, he was a law clerk to Judge Mark W. Bennett of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa and from 2015 to 2016, he was a law clerk for Judge Michael Joseph Melloy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. From 2016 to 2020, he served as an assistant United States attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida. Since 2020, he has been an attorney at the law firm of Lane & Waterman L.L.P., in Davenport, Iowa[3]

Nomination as U.S. attorney

On February 21, 2024, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Waterman to serve as the United States attorney for the Southern District of Iowa.[3] On February 27, 2024, his nomination was sent to the United States Senate.[4] On April 18, 2024, his nomination was favorably reported out of the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 20–1 vote.[5] His nomination is pending before the United States Senate.
