"Cough (Odo)", or just "Cough", is a song by Nigerian singer Kizz Daniel. The Philkeyz and Blaisebeatz-produced song was released on 14 October 2022 through Flyboy I.N.C and Empire Distribution as the third single from his fourth studio album Maverick (2023) and the Empire Distribution compilation album Where We Come From, Vol. 01 (2022).[1] A remix of the song featuring American reggaeton singer Becky G was released on 21 July 2023.[2]

Background

[edit]

Kizz Daniel released the song the same day Empire Distribution announced their compilation album Where We Come From, Vol. 01.[3] He revealed that he named the song "Cough (Odo)" as a nod to his Ghanaian fans, drawing inspiration from the Twi word "Odo," which means "the love of my life." In an interview with Lexis Bill on Joy FM, he explained that Ghana showed immense support for his previous hit, "Buga," where it stayed at No. 1 in the country longer than in any other African nation. This inspired him to show love back to Ghana by incorporating "Odo" into his latest track. The song enjoyed widespread popularity in Ghana, receiving massive airplay and streams.[4]

Reception

[edit]

Emmanuel Esomnofu, in his review for The Native, praised Kizz Daniel's "Cough (Odo)" as a festive hit that continues his streak of hit-making. In Esomnofu's opinion, the song, with its vibrant Blaisebeatz production, showcases Kizz Daniel's effervescent take on love, contrasting themes of heartbreak from his previous hits. He described the track as having "all the saccharine qualities of a hit record," with Kizz Daniel's vocals bringing an immersive, positive energy. Esomnofu highlighted its growing popularity, particularly on TikTok, and affirmed Kizz Daniel as a "genius hitmaker."[1]

Composition and lyrics

[edit]

In an official statement, Kizz Daniel stated, "For this song, I wanted to highlight the feeling of new love." He described the song as "energetic, celebratory and really captures what it's like to impress someone new."[5][6] The song features vibrant production by Blaisebeatz, characterized by sunny synths and upbeat percussions, giving the track a festival-ready vibe. Kizz Daniel leans into the theme of love, contrasting with the heartbreak theme in his previous hit "Pour Me Water." The lyrics focus on romantic sentiments, with Kizz Daniel singing about loving a woman right and being attuned to her desires. Notably, he repeatedly sings the phrase "Enter bathroom, fresh up," which has become a catchy part of the song. The track draws influence from the golden age of 90s R&B and the Motown era, reflecting a romantic and effervescent desire that has been a staple in popular music.[1]

The song set a record with 10.5 million streams and 70.2 million in radio plays, achieving the largest streaming week tally in Nigeria at the time. It also became only the second song ever to debut at No. 1 on every available platform in Nigeria, joining Davido's "FEM."
