Contabo is a global web hosting company based in Munich, Germany. Its main services include virtual private servers (VPS), web hosting, domain registration, and dedicated servers. For German-based customers, services also include telephone and broadband internet.[1]

Contabo was founded in 2003 by Michael Bölke and Michael Herpich,. and since then has become a global network with 12 data centres around the world hosting over 400,000 servers.[2] Its 12 data centres are located around the globe, including in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Nuremberg. Contabo's main target consumers include small to medium businesses, enterprises, entrepreneurs, and developers. Contabo's legal name is Contabo GmbH.

History

Contabo was founded in 2003 by Michael Bölke and Michael Herpich and was originally known as Giga-International[1]. The web hosting service was initially only available to German customers but became more widely available three years after its launch.

Contabo underwent a major website relaunch in April 2010, showcasing a new design. In 2019, Contabo received an investment from Oakley Capital. In 2021, Contabo acquired VSHosting and GPORTAL.

As of 2024, Contabo has over 300 staff members covering 12 locations worldwide. Its main base is in Munich, Germany.

Contabo provides a variety of hosting services worldwide, including virtual private servers, dedicated servers, shared hosting, object storage, API for cloud provisioning & management, and colocation services. The company offers DDoS protection to its customers as well as 24/7 customer service. For customers located in Germany, broadband internet and telephone services are available.

The cost of using Contabo's servers varies depending on the services used. As of 2024, prices range from $2.99 to $164.99 per month as a monthly subscription.

Notable Achievements

Contabo has made a name for itself as an affordable yet efficient web hosting company, which is managed thanks to the unified hardware platform in its data centres. They also have access to excellent discounts, which leads to lower prices for their customers.

In 2017, Contabo won the German Data Centre Award, an award given to the most innovative, visionary, energy-efficient data centres in Germany.[3] The award has been going since 2011.

Contabo extended outside of Europe for the first time in 2020, when it opened data centres in the USA.

Contabo has received several positive online user reviews thanks to its affordability and scalability. A client of ten years noted that the web hosting provider was cheap but with lots of RAM,[4] making it a good option for budget VPS hosting.

Criticisms/Challenges

Contabo has received some negative reviews over the years, specifically referring to poor customer service and frequent downtime at the Dusseldorf data centre.[4]

One major disruption occurred in September 2024, when there was an unexpected cooling problem at Contabo's Nuremberg data centre, which meant several servers were unavailable during a short time period. Contabo's telephone was unavailable during this time, which angered users even further. Services were back online by the evening.[2]

Contabo stated that the downtime was likely due to a severe storm in Franconia which caused a voltage fluctuation in the public power grid and led to the malfunction in the system.[5]

Contabo was founded in the spring of 2003 under the name Giga-International. Initially, the company operated with just a single server. Over the years, Contabo has expanded significantly and now manages over 400,000 servers worldwide.[6]

In 2009, Contabo established its first state-of-the-art data center in Munich, which could house more than 4,000 physical servers. In 2013, the company rebranded from Giga-International to Contabo and began offering its services internationally. To meet growing demand, Contabo opened a second data center in Nuremberg in 2014, capable of hosting 10,000 physical servers. In 2020, Contabo expanded its operations outside Europe by opening its first data centers in the United States, with locations in Central, East, and West USA.[7]

Contabo also recently opened a new data center in Mumbai, India. This facility aims to provide low-latency connections and high-performance cloud hosting solutions to customers in India and the South Asian Market.
