Catherine Ross, is the Chief Scientific Officer for Scotland.[1] and Head of Profession for the scientific workforce[2] across NHS Scotland, and is Scottish Governments most senior advisor for Health Science[3] and leads the development of government policy pertaining to the NHS Scotland scientific workforce[4]

Ross holds the position of Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Ulster University.

In December 2023 Ross was appointed as a Non-executive Director of the Belfast Trust[5][6]

Early career

Her career began in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast as a cardiac physiologist, a specialism within the professional group known as Healthcare Science[4] where she specialised in non-invasive cardiac imaging - cardiac ultrasound.

She was later appointed as the Head of Clinical Leadership within the CSO office in NHS England, later becoming the Scientific Lead for NHS England before moving into her current post as Chief Scientific Officer for Scottish Government [7]

Professional roles

She is the current chair of the National Societies Committee of the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions[8](ACNAP)[9] and Chair of the European Society of Cardiology's Allied Professionals Taskforce.

In 2024 she was elected as President of the Science Council[10] having previously served as Vice-Chair of the Science Council of the Board, and member of the Board of Trustees, having previously held the roles of Chair of the Science Council Policy Advisory Committee and a member of the nominations committee.[11]

Ross was elected President of the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology in 2014. During her tenure as President of SCST Ross overseen the publication of the Societys first Strategic Plan,[12] co-authored the Clinical Guidelines for Recording a Standard 12-Lead Electrocardiogram[13] and the development of the SCST Certificate of Proficiency in Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) Preceptorship Programme[14]

Awards and recognitions

In 2024 she was awarded Honorary Fellowship of The Royal College of Pathologists and Honorary Fellowship of The Physiological Society for her contribution to science policy, development of clinical physiology and commitment to the scientific charitable sector. [15]

In 2022 was awarded dual Fellowship of the Academy for Healthcare Science for her contribution to the development of the profession of healthcare science and for her contribution to the development of Healthcare Science education.[16]

She is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Biologist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
