Brandon J. Weichert (born June 9, 1988) is a national security analyst for The National Interest. Weichert has been described as a "panic and anxiety inducing scholar who tells us what we don't want to hear but need to know."[1]

Weichert is an occasional Subject Matter Expert for the United States Department of Defense and has consulted with multiple tech startups in Silicon Valley, notably those involved with the space economy.[2] He is also a pundit, who has appeared on a variety of news networks offering his expert commentary, including Mornings w/ Maria on Fox Business Network.[3]

Weichert is a regular on The John Batchelor Show, routinely being used to provide expert opinion on matters related to geopolitics and high-technology.[4]

He is the author of multiple controversial, though highly acclaimed books, all of which pertain US national security. Because of this work, Weichert is highly sought out speaker on US national security, technology policy, and geostrategy.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Weichert was born in South Bend, Ind., where he spent the first eight years of his life. Eventually, his family moved to Fort Myers, Fl., where he lived all the way through high school. At the age of 16, Weichert volunteered for his first political campaign, the Bush-Cheney reelection bid in 2004. He had intended to join the United States Navy upon graduation from high school, but was diagnosed with a severe form of Crohn's disease at the age of 18.

Refusing to be held back by his disease, Weichert returned to politics before going to college. He eventually found himself working for the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF), supporting various GOP candidates in Central Florida. He worked for various campaigns from 2006-08.

After the GOP's 2008 loss, Weichert moved to Chicago to attend DePaul University, where he majored in Political Science. While at DePaul University, Weichert became the president of the DePaul University College Republicans, where he garnered a reputation for his conservative activism on campus.

In the wake of the Norman Finkelstein controversy at DePaul University,[5] Weichert pressured the administration over what he perceived were unfair treatment of conservative students on campus.

This activism came to a head when the national media focused on the DePaul College Republicans' defense of Israel during what became known on campus as the "Humus Wars."[6] At that time, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) attempted to get the Israeli food brand, Sabra, banned on campus. Thanks to Weichert's activism and leadership of the DePaul College Republicans, the effort to ban Sabra products was stopped.[7]

Weichert was one of a handful of students who was elected to become a student representative to DePaul University's Political Science Department. He served in that capacity three years in a row, receiving overwhelming votes from his fellow students. This was an important role because DePaul University was one of the colleges in America that allowed its student representatives to have a say in which professors got tenure.

During his time at DePaul, Weichert was an active member of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA) and was a participant in the joint Atlantic Council-CCGA 2012 NATO Conference in Chicago, Ill.[8]

After graduating from DePaul University, Weichert got a job working on Capitol Hill. He would eventually enroll in the Institute of World Politics (IWP) in Washington, D.C., where he ultimately earned a Master of Arts in Statecraft and National Security Affairs.

Concurrent to his time at IWP, Weichert created his own website dedicated to geopolitics called "The Weichert Report: World News Done Right." Featuring unique analyses on a variety of often-ignored geopolitical issues, bringing on multiple guest writers, Weichert made a name for himself as a unique and interesting writer. This foray into the world of writing would eventually lead Weichert to become a full-time writer.

While studying at IWP, Weichert gave multiple lectures during and after his time at IWP for the Kosciusko Chair of Polish Studies. He was known as a contrarian thinker whose presentations often challenged the conventional wisdom on foreign policy.[9]

He became an Associate Member of New College at Oxford University in 2015. While there, Weichert studied under Professor Richard Coggins (Oriel College) where Weichert focused his studies on British Imperial Decline (1947-97). He had intended to stay and get a DPhil from Oxford University but his Crohn's disease forced him to abandon his studies and return to the United States to receive immunotherapy treatment.

Eventually, Weichert would move into a consulting role for various organizations, including the US Defense Department.

Career

[edit]

Upon returning to the States, Weichert became involved with the Trump campaign in 2016. He was an early signatory to F.H. Buckley's Scholars and Writers for Trump letter, which brought together some of the biggest names on the intellectual Right to show support for Donald J. Trump's presidential campaign.[10]

Around this time, Weichert was one of the very first hires for American Greatness, which was a new publication attempting to take on the establishment Right. His writings became instrumental in shaping the discourse during the tumultuous 2016 presidential election. He continued lending his voice and expertise in the pages of American Greatness for many years thereafter.[11]

Brandon Weichert has served in many capacities throughout his career. He started as a Congressional staffer. After leaving government service, Weichert began working as a consultant for various organizations, including the Department of Defense.

Weichert is an occasional contributor to the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI).[12]

In 2018, Weichert joined The American Spectator as a contributor.[13] While at The American Spectator, his writings were praised by the likes of Rush Limbaugh[14] and criticized by former Senator Patrick D. Leahy (D-VT)[15] for his opposition to the Leahy Laws.[16]

In 2020, Weichert's writings began appearing in the op-ed section of The Washington Times. His work has been featured repeatedly in places like Real Clear Politics, Real Clear World, Real Clear Policy, and Real Clear Defense.

A year later, in 2021, he became a contributor at the Asia Times, where he earned a reputation as a heterodox thinker.[17]

By 2023, Weichert was invited to join the staff at 19FortyFive.com, as a senior editor.[18] Weichert's primary focus at that point was on the 2024 presidential election and defense policy issues. His articles were so widely read that MSN.com began syndicating these pieces.

That year, Weichert became an energy security analyst at The-Pipeline.com, where he brought a critical eye to the popular narratives surrounding anthropogenic climate change.[19]

In May of 2023, Alex Ward of Politicoouted Brandon Weichert as one of a handful of informal foreign policy advisers to Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis' fledgling presidential campaign.[20] Ultimately, Weichert came out in support for former President Donald J. Trump's candidacy for reelection in 2024.

Then, in early 2024, Weichert was given the opportunity to join the staff at The National Interest as a national security analyst.[21] In this capacity, Weichert has garnered the greatest amount of recognition--and controversy. That's because Weichert has taken particular umbrage with what he views as the excesses of the American defense establishment.

Of note, Weichert has been accused by detractors of "waging a jihad against the aircraft carrier on behalf of the submarine mafia."[22] This is a reference to the fact that Weichert writes mostly on the need for the United States Navy to move beyond its commitment to expensive aircraft carriers and to focus instead on enhancing its submarine capabilities,[23] its unmanned undersea vehicles (UUV),[24] to build up its directed energy weapons (DEW),[25] its hypersonic weapons abilities,[26] and for the US military to expand its space warfare capabilities before it considers spending money on more aircraft carriers that can be sunk by anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) weapons.

Media Appearances

[edit]

Brandon J. Weichert has become prolific on the podcast and lecture circuit. He's also appeared on multiple national radio programs, such as The Dennis Prager Show,' as well as The War Room with Steve Bannon.[27] Weichert is usually asked to discuss his books or his takes on US national security and technology. But occasionally, he opines on domestic politics, too. Weichert has a weekly, hourlong spot on The Seth Leibsohn Show a popular Phoenix-based radio show with Salem Media. He's appeared on the BBC, too.

Weichert's appearances, though, come in a variegated nature. For instance, Weichert is a frequent guest on Coast to Coast with George Noory, where he discusses US military exotic technology. Weichert has even appeared repeatedly on InfoWars, discussing Chinese biohacking and Middle East geopolitics. In 2021, he was interviewed on the C-Span program Washington Journal discussing UfOs and the U.S. space program.[28] Weichert has come out against the idea that "Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon" (UAP) are alien in nature. Instead, he believes that the craft in question are radical and advanced covert military systems being tested in the atmosphere.

Brandon Weichert is known as an unorthodox thinker. This was one reason that he was asked to serve as the All-Source Intel Lead for the Russia Team during the Baltic Storm 2025 war-game. He often quotes Dr. Herman Kahn at the beginning of his public appearances by saying that he's "Against fashionable thinking."
