The A2214 is a road in south London between New Cross and Brixton. It runs between the A202 Queen's Road and the A204 Effra Road. It is one of the many inner London roads that is not signposted for almost the full-length of the road. In 2020, the road saw an average of around 11,550 vehicles travelling along the road, down from approximately 14,850 in 2019.[1][2][3]

Route

[edit]

The road starts on the A202 Queen's Road in New Cross, with the A2 Old Kent Road/New Cross Road in sight a further 0.553 kilometres (0.344 mi) further north. Heading south along Lausanne Road, until the junction with Selden Road and Gautrey Road, the A2214 is the border between the London Borough of Lewisham and London Borough of Southwark. The road passes junctions with Belfort Road, Mona Road, Gellatly Road (the B2142 towards Brockley), before becoming Evelina Road and leaving the borough of Lewisham behind.

As Evelina Road, the road passes junctions with Gibbon Road, St Mary's Road and Hollydale Road, before arriving at a railway bridge. Here, Nunhead Station is above us (slightly further south-east), where trains run towards Cannon Street and Victoria in the city, and Dartford and Sevenoaks in Kent. We then pass a car wash, and a minor junction with Kimberley Avenue. We passes a parade of shops and Nunhead Green, whilst also passing junctions with Howbury Road, Grimwade Close, Barset Road, Kirkwood Road, Brock Street, Cheam Street, Nunhead Green and Nunhead Grove, before bending around a corner to traffic lights, where we meet Linden Grove and Consort Road. Nunhead Lane then bends around corners a bit before passing a Costcutter newsagents and then passing Barforth Road, Old James Street, Carden Road, Barforth Road, before meeting Peckham Rye at traffic lights. We then pass Peckham Rye Common on both sides of the road before meeting the A2215/B219 Peckham Rye (yes, a completely different road with the exact same name) about 100 yards later at another set of traffic lights. This is also where the road name changes to East Dulwich Road, and as the name suggests, we head towards East Dulwich.

We head up East Dulwich Road, immediately passing a children's café on the corner with Peckham Rye (#134-#136 Peckham Rye), and then a newsagents at #1, Tesco Express at #5a-#9 and petrol station at #13-#19 on our left, interrupted halfway through by Solway Road, with Fenwick Road coming off to the right. After a junction with Gowlett Road, we pass another parade of shops, including a bicycle repair shop at #34, an off licence at #38, two separate pizza takeaways at #40 and #42, a picture framing shop at #44, a fish & chip takeaway at #46, a home furniture shop at #48, a nail salon at #50, a dry cleaners at #52, an ice cram shop at #54, a supermarket at #56 and an Indian takeaway at #58-#60, before this time it is Oakhurst Grove coming off to the left. Afterwards, we pass Goose Green playground, before meeting Crystal Palace Road and Adys Road at lights. We continue past Goose Green on our right, and are interrupted for a while before we meet Worlingham Road, and soon after that we meet the Goose Green Roundabout, where we meet Spurling Road and the A2216 road in the likes of Lordship Lane and Grove Vale.

We turn left and run concurrent with the A2216 Lordship Lane for a few hundred yards before turning right into East Dulwich Grove, which looks like a side road from Lordship Lane. We pass Oxonian Street, Matham Grove, Elsie Road, Tell Grove, Derwent Grove, Melbourne Grove, before reaching a parade of shops, this includes an Indian restaurant at #71, a newsagents at #73, a café at #75, a pizza restaurant at #77 and a dry cleaners at #79. We then find ourselves at Glengarry Road, before reaching Tessa Jowell Health Centre and The Charter School East Dulwich. We pass Glengarry Road, Thorncombe Road and Hillsborough Road, before reaching Alleyn's School and Townley Road. We continue down East Dulwich Grove passing JAGS (James Allen Girls School), Great Spilmans and Gilkes Crescent before we reach Dulwich Village/Red Post Hill and the A2214 becomes Village Way.

We head down and round along Village Way, under the bridge and up again to reach Half Moon Lane. We pass Beckwith Road, before reaching a parade of shops, with Holmdene Avenue squeezed in the middle. The parade of shops includes a pizza takeaway at #147, multiple cafes, a Thai restaurant at #141, a fish & chip takeaway at #131, as well as a newsagents at #129. We then pass Delawyk Cresent, Howletts Road, Ruskin Walk, Burbage Road, Carver Road, Winterbrook Road and Stradella Road before reaching some more shops in the centre of Herne Hill, as well as the road named Herne Hill, part of the A215, on its route from Elephant & Castle to Shirley.

We run concurrent with the A215 for a few hundred yards, passing Milkwood Road on the right in the process. We then regain freedom, turning right onto Dulwich Road, with independent shops on the right, and Brockwell Park/Brockwell Lido on the left. We pass the road. Also on the right we pass Brockwell Passage, Hurst Street, Rymer Street and Regent Road. At the junction of Regent Road, it is the location where we also pass the Prince Regent public house. We pass Milton Road, Shakespeare Road, Spencer Road and Chaucer Road before a butchers at #1 Dulwich Road, and a pet groomers at #68 Brixton Water Lane, as well as reaching the point where the A2214 becomes a one-way system; the final hurdle of the journey. Finally, the A2214 (towards Brixton) goes down Brixton Water Lane, with the finish line in sight, passing an entrance with Brockwell Park, a junction with Arlingford Road and some shops with a public house opposite to the shops, placed on the corner of the junction with the A204 (Tulse Hill/Effra Road) and Brixton Water Lane. Meanwhile, if you are heading towards Dulwich, you would take the former-B231 Morval Road, passing Trelawn Road, before turning right onto Dalberg Road where you would continue your journey.
