Patrick Treacy is an Irish physician specializing in aesthetic medicine.[1][2] He is recognized for his contributions to the field of cosmetic procedures and has gained particular attention for his treatment of high-profile clients, including Michael Jackson during the singer's stay in Ireland in 2006, and introducing hyaluronidase protocols to the field of aesthetic medicine.[1][2][3][4]

Biography

Patrick Treacy was born in 1950 in Garrison, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. [1][2] His parents operated a shop, garage, and fuel station in the area. During his early years, Treacy attended Queens University in Belfast at the height of the Northern Ireland conflict, commonly referred to as "The Troubles." In interviews, he has spoken about an attack by paramilitary forces, which led to an injury during his university years, prompting him to transfer to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dublin to complete his medical studies.[3][4][5][6]

In 1990, during Saddam Hussein's rule, Treacy worked as a health doctor at Ibn 'al Bitar Hospital in Baghdad. While traveling through Kurdistan to report on the Halabja gas attacks, he was detained by the Iraqi Army near Erbil and held for five days.[6][7] Treacy began his medical career in Dublin in the late 1980s. He was later relocated to New Zealand,[6] where he served as a respiratory and cardiology registrar at Dunedin Hospital. [8][5] His international career included work as a ship’s surgeon in Florida and as a flying doctor with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia in the 1990s.[8][5][9][3][10]

In 2000, Treacy founded the Ailesbury Clinic in Dublin, one of the pioneering facilities for cosmetic medicine in Ireland. He later expanded, opening a second clinic in Cork in 2005. The clinic provides a range of aesthetic services, and Treacy has become well-regarded within the field for his work in managing aesthetic complications. In 2003, he won the professional medical media category at the GlaxoSmithKline Medical Media Awards.[8][5][9][3][10]

In his memoir, The Needle and the Damage Done, Treacy discusses the impact of the 2008 Irish economic recession on his business and his clients, some of whom faced financial and emotional hardships as a result of the downturn.[8][5][9][3][10]

Affiliation with Michael Jackson

Treacy was the aesthetic doctor for Michael Jackson during the pop star's extended stay in Ireland in 2006. According to Treacy, Jackson reached out to him due to his charitable work in Africa. Treacy has stated that he developed a friendship with Jackson, who expressed interest in collaborating on a concert in South Africa to support children affected by HIV/AIDS.  In 2009, Treacy was listed as a potential witness in the trial of Conrad Murray , Jackson’s physician, but was ultimately not called to testify.[8][5][9][3][10] In interviews, Treacy shared that he administered the anesthetic propofol under controlled conditions twice during Jackson's cosmetic procedures.[8][5][9][3][10][11][12][13]

Patrick Treacy has authored and contributed to multiple publications focused on aesthetic medicine, including the management of complications arising from cosmetic procedures. His notable works include:[14][15][16]

Charitable works

Aside from his clinical work, Treacy has been active in charity, particularly in African countries where he has contributed medical services and advocated for healthcare improvements.[15][17][18] His work has focused on promoting awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment[17], an interest that resonated with Michael Jackson’s humanitarian goals during their association.[17][19][20][18][21]
