Douglas Craddock Jr. is an American higher education professional and currently serves as the Vice President for Community Engagement at the University of Louisville. He is recognized for his work in advancing educational equity, fostering university-community relationships, and creating strategies to improve student success and access.
Early life and education
[edit]Craddock earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, in 2008. This was followed by a Master of Engineering & Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2012), where he worked with advisor Dale Callahan. Craddock obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2017. His dissertation, titled "War, Civil Rights, and Higher Education: African American Vietnam Veterans, The Civil Rights Era, and The G.I. Bill," was supervised by Philo Hutcheson.
Career
[edit]Craddock has held various academic and administrative positions, with a particular emphasis on community engagement and institutional leadership.
In March 2020, Craddock began his tenure at the University of Louisville as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the College of Education & Human Development, contributing to both teaching and community-focused academic initiatives. He was appointed Chief of Staff for the College of Education & Human Development in March 2022, under the leadership of Dean Dr. Lori Gonzalez. In this role, he worked to strengthen the college’s outreach to the local community while overseeing key operations within the college.
In July 2021, Craddock transitioned to serve as Chief of Staff to the Executive Vice President and University Provost at the University of Louisville. In this capacity, he supported senior leadership in advancing the university's academic mission and fostering collaboration across departments and colleges.
In February 2022, Craddock was named Interim Vice President for Community Engagement, and he was appointed permanently to this position in January 2023. His work has focused on strengthening the relationship between the university and the broader Louisville community, with a particular emphasis on addressing systemic inequality, improving access to higher education, and promoting community-based initiatives that support social justice.

[edit]As Vice President for Community Engagement, Craddock has led several initiatives to foster collaboration between the university and local communities. His work ensures that the university's resources and expertise contribute to addressing significant social and educational disparities in Louisville.
Notable initiatives under Craddock’s leadership include:
- The Signature Partnership Initiative, which seeks to address socioeconomic disparities in West Louisville by connecting academic resources with community needs. An event related to this initiative showed high school students how to take control of their lives and futures.[1]
- Leading community service events such as "Cards Come Together," which encourages University of Louisville students and staff to engage in volunteer efforts throughout the community.[2]
- Overseeing the TRIO Programs, which provide support to underrepresented students to help them succeed in higher education.[3]
Dr. Craddock has also been integral to the University of Louisville’s partnership with UofL Health and the American Heart Association, focusing on advancing health and wellness initiatives.[4]

Recognition and awards
[edit]Craddock has received recognition for his leadership, including being named to Louisville Business First's Forty Under 40 for his contributions to education and community engagement.[6] He is also a member of the Leadership Louisville Center's Class of 2022, which acknowledged his leadership in both the academic and civic sectors.[7]
Additionally, Craddock is a featured speaker at events such as the YP Unite Summit, where he shares insights on leadership and community building.[8] He was also recognized for his impactful work in inclusive excellence during the ACC Unity Tour.[9]
Other contributions
[edit]Craddock is involved in various professional organizations and community-focused initiatives, where he advocates for educational policies that support equity and inclusion. He serves on several advisory boards and collaborates with local community leaders to enhance educational efforts.
He also plays a key role in supporting Black male doctoral students at the University of Louisville through initiatives like BMEN: Black Male Edquity Network, a network designed to foster mentorship and academic success.[10][11]
