Haroldo Dilla Alfonso (Havana, 1952)1is a Cuban/Dominican/Chilean sociologist and historian. Biography [edit] He is a graduate of pedagogy and history at the University of Havana, did postgraduate studies at the universities of Ottawa and Carleton in Canada as part of the Pearson program of the International Development Research Centre of Canada and completed a PHD at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL). Between 1980 and 1998 he was a researcher and director of Latin American studies at the Center for American Studies in Havana.1After the repression against this center in 1996 documented in the book “The CEA Case” by Maurizio Giuliano, and other repressive actions against him between 1997 and 2000, Dilla was forced to go into exile in the Dominican Republic, where he resided for three decades and whose citizenship he adopted. There he was research coordinator of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, researcher and professor at several local universities and coordinator of the Cities and Borders Group,1 thelatter entity that consolidated border studies in the Dominican Republic. Between 2004 and 2008 he led the research team of the National Centre of Competence in Research NCCR-SNSF in the Dominican Republic. He is currently a Chilean citizen and lives in Santiago de Chile. Between 2021 and 2024 he was director of the Institute of International Studies (INTE) of the Arturo Prat University, where he is currently a full professor. Between 2022 and 2024 he was founding president of the Latin American and Caribbean Association of Border Studies (ALEF). He has been a visiting professor or researcher at several Latin American, North American and European universities, such as Harvard, Rutgers, University of Puerto Rico, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, FLACSO Mexico and Brown.1In Chile he has been an adjunct professor at several universities, such as the Pontificia Católica (PUCCH), Diego Portales (UDP) and Alberto Hurtado (UAH). He has also been a consultant or researcher for international organizations such as several agencies of the United Nations system, several European cooperation agencies and the Ford Foundation, among others. His written work, spread over 18 books and several dozen articles in specialized journals, covers studies on Caribbean history, local development, borders, migration and urban issues. He has been a regular columnist for several press outlets in Cuba, Mexico, Chile and the Dominican Republic.1 Works [edit] Among his main works (as author, co-author or editor) are:
