Salahuddin Mohammad Reza (Bengali: সালাউদ্দিন মোহাম্মদ রেজা; 1 February 1925 – 18 March 2003) was a Bangladeshi military officer . His military career spanned more than two decades, beginning with his service in the Pakistan Army in 1948. He fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.He served in the East Bengal Regiment, for a long period of his career. [1] He reached to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel there.Reza joined the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.He was senior most Bengali officer in Pakistan Army at that time to join the war of Liberation.Reza resigned from the Bangladesh Army when he was a Colonel in 1972.

Early life

Reza was born into a Bengali Muslim family in Chittagong, Bengal,British India, on 1 February 1925. His ancestral village is in Dayamir Union within Bancharampur of Brahmanbaria District.

Reza attended Annada Government High School in Brahmanbaria, matriculating at Serampore Union Institution in 1939.He studied his Intermediation of Arts at Presidency College, Calcutta, and graduated in 1941.He stood 5th in the examination of Intermediation of Arts in Presidency College, Calcutta.He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the same institution in 1944 by securing Second Class 1st Position.He enrolled as a cadet at the Pakistan Military Academy at the end of 1947.

Pakistan Army

When he joined the Pakistan Army, On 25 November 1948, he received a regular commission as a second lieutenant in the Pakistan Army Reza was initially attached to the 1st Battalion,East Bengal Regiment, which was stationed in at Kurmitola in Dhaka.He was later posted to 2nd East Bengal Regiment.

Osmani was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1952.As a Captain he served as the ADC of Major General Yusuf General Officer Commanding of 14th Infantry Division.In 1957 he was promoted to the rank of Major.In 1959 he obtained PSC degree from Pakistan Command and Staff College Quetta.In 1965 he was promted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Liberation War of Bangladesh

He was in touch with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in connection with the preparation of an armed rising against Pakistan.After the crackdown of 25th March he went to Brahmanbaria.There he was received by Major(later Colonel) Shafaat Jamil.He also took part in the Conference of Teliapara with other senior Bengali officers [2] He was not given command of any unit and was held in dark about the war and it's planning for unknown reasons.

Bangladesh Army

After the independence of Bangladesh in January 1972 he was the first Bangladeshi officer to establish station Headquarters at Dhaka Cantonment.In 1972 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel.In April 1972 he resigned from the Army.

After Retirement

After retirement he obtained a LL.B degree from Dhaka Central Law College.He was also a founding member of Retired Armed Forces Officers' Welfare Association [3]

Death

He died on 18 March 2003
