Category:Sportspeople from Sheffield is not limited to people born or brought up in Sheffield; it is used, as are other such categories, for anyone whose sporting career was in whole or in part in the place concerned, in this case Sheffield. Sheffield United players were "from Sheffield" in that sense - obviously the proportion of those on the team actually born in the city has declined ever so slightly down the years. Since when? The categories Sportspeople from Town are sub categories of People from Town categories created to sub divide them. The category People from Town categories include people who were born in the place in question - not someone who happened to work there for a bit. The vast majority of players in this category are not from Sheffield, the club has always recruited from a much wider base, even in it's earliest years, so your 'ever so slightly' comment is way off the mark. Are you suggesting that we add in anyone who happened to spend some time working or living in Sheffield into the People from Sheffield category? In fact you can't even claim that they should be included due to residence - most of United's current players don't live in Sheffield, they commute. Please provide the MOS to substantiate your claim. Bladeboy1889 (talk) 00:30, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The "Sportspeople from" category, in Sheffield or anywhere else, is a navigational aid put there to help people link that town with sportspeople whose sporting career is or was significant to the town. A person born in Sheffield who spent their professional football career with Athletic Bilbao - though why anyone would leave Sheffield for the Basque Country is hard to understand - should be listed under "Sportspeople from Bilbao", and if the also played for non-Sheffield teams (again, why would they) they should be listed also under any other "Sportspeople from" category that relates to their sports career. Conversely, people from Bilbao that play football for Sheffield become sportspeople from Sheffield. Brocach (talk) 21:10, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your logic makes no sense - the many of the players listed in the Sheffield United category are not known for their association with Sheffield - take John Egan - he made one appearance for Sheffield United, on loan, and that wasn't even played in Sheffield - but you feel he's notable due to his association with Sheffield? As I said before - please could you provide the MOS links for this interpretation of these categories that you're basing your view on as it's not one I've ever come across.
