Categories and subcategories

[edit]

There's a discussion going on in Wikipedia talk:Categorization about the practice of moving articles out of a category when placing them in a subcategory. The consensus developing is that since having articles in both categories and subcategories effectively takes up no more space than having them in only subcategories, and because some users may find it more useful to browse all the articles in one place, that in many cases it may be a good idea to place articles in both category and subcategory.

The musician categories are a good example of the kind of categories that would benefit from this kind of duplication. Take Category: American musicians, for example--right now, it's supposed to include musicians from the U.S. who are not subcategorized in a state category--which is a completely useless subset of musicians. Why not have the musicians in both the state subcategories and the American category? If people find the category too big, they can still browse the subcategories instead.

It's a fairly substantial change, so I thought I'd put a note here to direct people to the ongoing discussion in case they wanted to weigh in. --Nareek 13:12, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm personally a little disturbed by the idea, but I can see the usefulness. Does that go all the way up though? Should EVERY musician be in Category:Musicians, regardless of what other subcats there in? B.Mearns*, KSC 19:37, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Too many articles

[edit]

There are over 300 articles in this category; there should be none. They should all be in subcategories. I'll move some. --musicpvm 21:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Musicians and Musicians'

[edit]

I'd just like a quick show of internet hands; would it be alright for me to put some kind of tag on the category page just saying that this category (and subcategories) are for individual musicians; bands would go under musical groups. In editing this i've found many groups/duo's have been erroneously put in these categories, and it might help (at least a bit). Ironholds (talk) 16:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Artists?

[edit]

Category:Music is a sub-category of Category:Arts (Category:Arts by type) and then I think Category:Musicians should be a sub-category of Category:Artists by genre. —  Ark25  (talk) 19:23, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
