@Psychastes: This category is for people who are jewish, which is both a religion and ethnicity. The other category is for philsophers of religion, which doesn't require that the person be Jewish. Mason (talk) 02:19, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
is there a standard policy for dealing with this re:judaism? it seems like an issue that ought to come up in many contexts, and there are certainly philosophers in this category who *aren't* jewish by religion, so they wouldn't belong in it if the category is grouped under Category:Philosophers by religionPsychastes (talk) 02:23, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There may be some individuals in the category who don't consider themselves to be religious jews, but the general policy as far as I know is that the defining features of being Jewish is that it is both a religion and an ethnicity. I'll see if I can dig up some cases/policy. If someone in here doesn't idenitfy as being Jewish, they shouldn't be in the cateogry. Mason (talk) 02:28, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that being Jewish and a philosopher is probably not defining at the intersection with ethnicity. However, ERGS specifically uses being Jewish as an example for ethnicity. Because of this classification, people might expect to see it in that category and may assume it doesn't exist if they don't find it there. Including this category in one section but not the other is unhelpful for navigation. Since both categories exist, we should include it in both to avoid confusion.
