Creation of new category

[edit]

I'm not a big fan of the "Critics of" categories, but now that the discussion over at WP:CFD seems to have determined that "Anti-Catholicism" is no longer an appropriate tag for people and organizations, there is no way to note an article subject's anti-Catholicism without some category like this one. Also, if we ARE going to have categories like "Critics of Mormonism" or "Critics of Islam," then for consistency's sake, we might as well have this one. So I've created it, and populated it with a few articles to get things rolling. The fact that this category potentially spans from internally dissenting Catholics to outsiders offering polite critique to sober theological disagreement to straight-up hate groups is very troubling, I admit. But that seems to be a general problem with the way that the "Critics of" categories are evolving, rather than a Catholic issue in particular.

Also, a word on the name: The other "Critics of" categories are "Critics of Mormonism/Judaism/Buddhism," so I went with "Critics of Catholicism," not "Critics of the Catholic Church" out of deference to that "Critics of X-ism" standardized format. Out of respect for the sensibilities of Anglo-Catholic Anglicans, I thought about using "Critics of Roman Catholicism," but that would leave out anyone with a critique of the various Eastern Catholic rites in union with the Pope. It's a fraught issue, though. Sorry if I made the wrong choice.

Here's hoping this new category is a helpful contribution to Wikipedia's self-taxonomy, and not just a pesky POV-magnet. Rinne na dTrosc (talk) 22:04, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If they decided that it doesn't seem to have affected Category:Anti-Catholicism by country as its sub-categories seem to often have people or organizations in them. Still I think this might work to describe people who are critical, but not hostile or at least not violently hostile, to Catholicism.--T. Anthony (talk) 12:06, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
