Using a bot to automatically populate citation titles
[edit]Just like wiki bots that scan for broken links, we could set up a bot that follows web citations, and automatically populate the title with the page's <title> element if it exists. I'm sure this would clear up thousands of missing titles with relative ease. BoffinbraiN (talk) 12:44, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- @BoffinbraiN: This page has only six watchers. A better place to ask would be WP:BOTREQ, but I think that bots already exist for this. For example, there is citation bot (talk · contribs), which also makes a lot of mistakes. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:58, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- The best place to start a discussion about any of these CS1 error categories is Help talk:Citation Style 1. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:17, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
Mention of template
[edit]To editor Jonesey95: wasn't a big deal. Just thought that since the template throws an automatic error on its page, and since that makes it populate this cat, it would be less of a surprise to editors to see that it's supposed to be here. That was stimulated by this edit request. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 15:02, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- There are many template pages that show this sort of error; I don't think it makes sense to single out one of them for mention on this page. False-positive errors like these can often be fixed by noinclude-ing a dummy title in the template code. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:31, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
