move prima ballerinas and prima ballerina assolutas categories to ballet dancers (crossposted from prima ballerinas and prima ballerina assolutas)
[edit]Is there objection to moving the prima ballerinas and prima ballerina assolutas categories directly to the ballet dancers category? Doing so would make it more accessible. Robert Greer (talk) 23:08, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
ballerinas vs. prima ballerinas vs. prima ballerina assolutas
[edit]Neither a prima ballerina assoluta (nor a prima ballerina) should be placed in this, Category:Ballerinas, any more than a general (or colonel) would be redundantly categorized as a major, captain and lieutenant. — Robert Greer (talk) 03:25, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Problems with this page
[edit]I have a few problems with this page:
1. When a ballerina is added to Wikipedia and the category:ballerina is used, the name is added to this list... which is great... except it does not alphabetize the name correctly! So when the page "Genia Melikova" was created and included the category:ballerina, the name was added under "G" for Genia rather than "M" for Melikova. It seems like the name should be used as "Genia Melikova" so that it links with other references which use the same arrangement - such as The Juilliard School List of faculty. There seem to be a number of names out of alphabetical order on the page. Does anyone know how to fix this... I am very new here so this edit is beyond my technical level!
FIXED: By adding to the Genia Melikova page, her name is now properly alphabetized on the List of Ballerinas. (I found this code while checking out some other pages.) Seamanjg
2. Some ballerinas who have attained the status of "Prima" or "Prima Absoluta" are already on this page - I assume because of the use of catgory:ballerina.
3. I think it is an excellent idea to combine the three pages - Ballerinas / Prima Ballerinas / Prima Ballerinas Absoluta - into a single list. Naturally, each ballerina's full status should be documented.
Another user suggested this but then wrote a confusing message later.
I think it is valuable to avoid redundancy whenever possible. Combining the three pages would address this.
Thoughts? Help? Ideas? Thanks!

Status of Ballerina
[edit]There are a number of female ballet dancers who are categorized as "Ballerina" but appear to have been merely in the corp de ballet. Others, like Twyla Tharp, are female dancers but I find it hard to refer to them as "Ballerina's".
According to the article on Wikipedia: "Although the term ballerina is commonly used informally to describe any female ballet dancer, it was a rank given only to the most exceptional female soloists. "
Anyone concerned about this? Thanks.
