BCV: Battle Construction Vehicles, known in Japan as Kensetsu Juuki Kenka Batoru: Buchigire Kongou!! (建設重機喧嘩バトル ぶちギレ金剛!!), is a non-traditional fighting video game with visual novel elements for the PlayStation 2 game console, where the player must battle in various construction vehicles.

The game was only released in Europe and Japan. It was also one of the first PlayStation 2 titles to be released in DVD-ROM format, rather than CD-ROM as most early PS2 titles were. The story, told through visual novel-style anime segments, follows the reluctant heir to a construction company as he rebuilds his family's reputation and settling construction site contracts through vehicular combat.[2] The player uses vehicles commonly found on construction sites like diggers and bulldozers. Additional characters can be unlocked by playing the story. The European release notably gives the characters English accents.

Plot

[edit]

Hayato Kongo, the confident yet dense heir to the failing Kongo construction company after his father's supposed death, discovers his passion for construction vehicle battles after a duel with his father's coworker Kazukiyo Danoura. Through a series of battles, Hayato recruits vehicle operators such as the mysterious Tamunojo Matsubayama, the effeminate-yet-strong Beth Gouda, the headstrong Kyoko Tachibana, and the ruthless Raita Adachi. As the Kongo crew battles for dominance with the rival Shurabe Corporation, Hayato learns the uncomfortable truth about his father and Kyoko, who he has fallen in love with.

Reception

[edit]

German GamePro Magazine theorised on their 03/2005 DVD that the programmer escaped a mental institution, because "it needs a good bunch of craziness to invent a "excavator-em up" " The vehicles were criticised as "sluggish as an elephant drugged with tranquilizers" and the controls were deemed difficult to understand.[3]

In 2022, interest in BCV resurged after both videogamedunkey and the Game Grumps played it on their respective channels.[4][5]
